422 win BBC2 Young Folk Award

Since their appearance in our last issue along with other packbrats the very wonderful 422 have won the BBC 2 Young Folk Award. This brings the award back to SRFNdom for the second time and the hills of Derbyshire will no doubt be alive with the sound of music for a long time to come. Congratulations to Sophie and Emily Ball, Ian Stephenson all local to this area as well as to ace accordionist Sam Pirt from the truly talented City of Hull and not forgetting Joey Oliver, who through no fault of his own does not live round here. Well done!

Farewell to Ann and Glyn

There's been mention elsewhere about the Red House. This old pub on Solly Street has been for a long time a haven for Real Ale afficionados as well as for Session musicians. We are sorry to have learned that our genial hosts, Ann and Glyn, are to leave the pub in March. I must confess a certain trepidation as to what this will mean for the three sessions which take place at the Red House every week.; We can only extend our thanks to Ann and Glyn and wish them all the best for the future - with love and thanks from all of the musicians, young and old, whom they have made welcome over the years.

Roy Bailey (MBE)

Our illustrious President Roy Bailey is now an MBE. Roy was clearly chuffed when he was interviewed on Radio Sheffield but he still has reservations about the 'E' part of the award - come on Roy, the words 'British Empire' in your title have got to be more wholesome than having the word 'Parliament' in it?

Doc Rowe (Living Tradition)
Then there's our VicePresident, Doc Rowe. The featured centrefold of 'Living Tradition,' Johnny Adams' and Dave Heron's article on the man is accurate and pertinent. It's also downright scary. Yet again a case of the world sitting back whilst arguably the most important collector since Sharp finds himself forced into penury and a collection of International significance becomes scattered. Thank goodness for the likes of Johnny Adams who got things going to set up a fund to preserve Doc's massive and important collection. Donations are still needed, so please contact us at the address opposite.

Network grabs gold

[Webmaster: Observant readers may have noticed a strange award sellotaped to the front of this website. Being a recluse who rarely leaves ye olde attic hovel, I tend to shun publicity, but Robin Garside (artist, singer, musician, songwriter, drinker of excellent ales, etc) was keen to have this bit included. Oh well]
This website was designed and built by SRFN committee member Mike Stannett, and wasn't on the net more than 3 weeks before it was given a prestigious Golden Web Award. Awarded by the International Association of Web Masters and Designers Golden Webs are given in recognition of content, functionality, usability, aesthetics and design. The site is intended to allow the user to see quickly and easily what is going on in the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Folk Scene, as well as letting you contact the SRFN for merchandise such as Tshirts, tune books, song books, CDs from local singers and musicians and spread the word about the Folk Arts generally.
