Beating the Bounds

SRFN Christmas Shop at NCPM

Change of venue: The shop will be open at the National Centre for Popular Music this year, NOT Orchard Square.

Christmas is approaching all too rapidly ... that's the kind of information to make you wince normally. However, this year is going to be different for those of us in SRFN-Land who struggle with the annual trudge round the shops. After last year's successful experiment, the manager of the Orchard Square precinct tried valiantly to donate a vacant shop space so that we can run an information and retailing point in the very heart of Sheffield city centre, and we are grateful for his efforts on our behalf. Due to problems beyond our control, the shop has been switched to the National Centre for Popular Music (NCPM), to whom we're grateful for this opportunity at such short notice. Orchard Square will still be host to live folk music on 10 of our "shopping days", so come along to both venues and have a thoroughly enjoyable time. We will carry our usual stock of Network publications and CDs for local artists, plus whatever nifty and seasonal ideas we can come up with.

The shop will open between roughly 10am and 3pm each day from December 7th to 22nd. SRFN Executive member Ian Spafford will head up the shop squad, and volunteers for the staff rota are urgently required in order to get the planning under way.

If you can help, ring Ian on (0786) 7780 714 or Ron on (0114) 247 0099, or fill out our online contact form. In any event, do drop in to see us as you pass by - and check out the merchandise while enjoying the music.

TE on CD

Anyone who has visited the Booit Straps Club at the Commercial in Chapeltown of a Monday will no doubt have met the irrepressible Ted Earnshaw. A cunning and devious Lou Marriott managed to get Ted to record twelve of his own songs, and thanks to Hedley Jones of Wath Folk Club a CD entitled Mi Little Paintbox by Ted Earnshaw is now available (at just £6.00). As might be expected of the man, Ted is donating all of the proceeds to the Cancer Unit at Sheffield's Northen General Hospital. Details from Lou Marriott on (0114) 284 5922 or Ted Earnshaw on (0114) 245 5250.

Bay Horse returns

It was one of the best clubs in the 70s in this area and now the Bay Horse once again plays host to Folk music with its resident duo, the Buffalo Brothers. This famous pub at Bentley near Doncaster re-opens as a folk venue at 8.30pm on November 27th with guest Tony Capstick. Admission £4.00. Details from Graham Hudson on (01302) 349329.

On the Borders

There seems to be a hive of activity out on the North Eastern border of the region. The indefatigable Pete Barnard is not content with running the AVID roadshow, but now seeks to spread the gospel further with workshops. Now, ... workshops are generally tricky little beasties, but when you discover, one Spring afternoon in April 2000, that your tutor is going to help you be an effective dance caller, and that tutor is none other than Martin Harvey, it starts to sound irresistable! Assuming, of course, you didn't already get some hints and tips for playing from the great and good John Kirkpatrick at the earlier workshop in February... You can get details and prices direct from Pete on (01427) 873937.

Acoustic Sell-out!

The story is told of Spencer the Rover, who noticed while passing near Rotherham that the new club at Wickersley - Acoustic Shoes - had an opening night sell-out! Maxie and Mitch delivered the usual high energy goods and folkdom is the richer for it. Currently the same source reveals that tickets for Jez Lowe on December 14th are flying out of the door like, er ..., flying things... It's good to know that the club scene is by no means dead and it seems that things are quite the contrary in Rotherham's cultural oasis of Wickersley, where such goings-on happen monthly on a Tuesday. Why not visit their website and get the low-down (or should that be Lowe-down?)
