Events Archive 1999

Welcome to the SRFN Events Archive. The history of the SRFN is in large part a history of the events our members organise and collaborate upon. We archive our original web adverts, and where possible include snippets of information from the relevant Executive and other meetings involved in getting the event off the ground. Eventually, we hope to build a valuable resource, both for future SRFN event organisers, and also for the wider regional folk arts community. By examining the procedures followed in setting up each event, and seeing how well things turned out, visitors to this site should find at least a little guidance for running future events of their own.

For details of forthcoming events, see the Events Index.

SRFN Shop at National Centre for Popular Music

(Change of venue for shop, but musicians still appearing at Orchard Square)

7 - 22 December, 10.00 am - 3.00 pm (ish) daily.

Following the SRFN tradition of bringing Folk to folk, we will be running a shop this Christmas. Due to problems beyond our control, the shop will NOT be in Orchard Square as originally announced in the Newsletter, but rather at the National Centre for Popular Music. Orchard Square will still be home to live folk music on ten of our "shopping days", so come along to both venues and have a thoroughly enjoyable time. You might even find some of those indefensible, er ... indispensable, Christmas items that won't be forgotten in a hurry.

Apart from these changes, events are as announced in the Newsletter.

Kelham Island Victorian Christmas Weekend

3 - 5 December, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm daily.

A perennial favourite with visitors of all kinds and ages, Kelham Island Victorian Christmas Market is one of those few authentic "must-see" events. Featuring stalls and events, including the SRFN stall where you'll be welcome whether you want to buy a really neat Christmas present, or just have a chat, the annual Victorian Christmas Market combines nostalgia for a by-gone era with the vibrancy of a living tradition against the solid backdrop of Industrial Sheffield. Universally enjoyed by all who attend, whether in period costume or not.

The Roy Harris Celebration Folk Day

See also: http://www.dougporter.freeserve.co.uk and http://www.folkwales.org.uk/

The content of this page has been copied with permission from Doug Porter's website at http://www.dougporter.freeserve.co.uk, where more information is available.
[Note: this site is no longer active]

As many folk music enthusiasts know, illness has finally demanded that Roy Harris retire from touring and much other active work at which he has excelled for many years. The Peasmouldia Folk Club in Derby was proud to be able to present his final touring performance and a number of his old friends in the profession, unable to get to that show, asked if there might be another chance to show their sincere appreciation for Roy's work, and for the help and encouragement he gave to them in their careers. The idea was mooted to put on a Day of Folk by way of a Celebration of Roy's participation in the Folk Revival and thus I am able to report the following progress.

The event will be at the Beeston Community Centre, West End, Beeston, Notts. on 30th October 1999. Start at 12 noon and run to near midnight. Tickets: All Day £10; Afternoon £5; evening, £5. Organisers are: Mick Tems (Mari Arts, Llantrisant), Dave & Ruth Cooper (Robin Hood Folk Club), and Doug Porter; Mick is underwiting the initial expenses and The Robin Hood crowd move their club for this day.

Cheques payable to "Roy Harris Folk Day" (WITH SAE please) should be sent directly to Doug Porter at

D.J. Porter/VOR Publications & Audio,
269 Birchover Way, Allestree,
Derby DE22 2RS, England.
Phone/Fax 01332 556705 (fax by arrangement only)
e-mail: djp@freeuk.com

The artistes appearing - at their own expense - so far listed are:

BOB AXFORD & SOPHIE WRIGHT; TOM AND BARBARA BROWN; CALENNIG; KAREN & COLIN CATER; CHRIS COE & JOHN ADAMS; PETE COE/SUE COE; JOHNNY COLLINS; JERRY EPSTEIN (USA); JON HARVISON; KEITH KENDRICK; PAT KILBRIDE; MAINBRACE; NOTTS ALLIANCE; BRIAN PETERS; JOHN PRENTICE; DOUG PORTER; SALT OF THE EARTH; CYRIL TAWNEY. DAVE WEBBER & ANNI FENTIMAN

Several other acts have expressed their desire to take part but are unable through specific engagements. Trevor Lister of Folk Roundabout magazine has offered his services as bouncer!

Plans so far are for a Grand Ceilidh and a Concert, other specialities may follow. The venue is limited to around 250 so early purchase of tickets is advised. We have the opportunity to use another venue if numbers (singers and audience!) demand. The venue has its own bar and Tea Bar; 'Fast Foods' are available nearby as are cafes and 'eating houses'. Parking should pose no great problems; preference will be to Artistes and disabled.

Organisers: Dave & Ruth Cooper (Robin Hood Folk Club); Doug Porter; Mick Tems (Mari Arts).

To help the admin please direct all communications concerning this event to Doug Porter at djp@freeuk.com.
